Dr. Ming Wang, an internationally renowned laser eye surgeon and a Harvard & MIT graduate (MD, magna cum laude), will present a lecture entitled AI application in laser vision surgeries – as an inaugural lecture at University of Hawaii AI lecture series. Dr. Wang’s life story has been depicted in the Angel Studios’ film “Sight” (FREE link: sight.drmingwang.com), based on Dr. Wang’s autobiography “From Darkness to Sight”. The film has won the Best Picture at ICVM International Christian Film Award. Dr. Wang’s faith journey is also featured in the award-winning Christina film “God’s Not Dead”.
“AI is transforming the entire healthcare industry now!” Dr. Wang said. He has published 27 books including 17 books on laser vision surgeries, and a paper in the world renowned journal “Nature”. Dr. Wang performed the world’s first laser artificial cornea implantation and holds many patents including two about the world’s first amniotic membrane contact lens (the story of invention is told in the film “Sight”). The technology is now used by eye doctors from nearly every nation, and millions of patients have been helped. It has transformed the world and it is now a $5 billion USD a year industry. “Though I did not make any money myself since I have donated my patents to the world, I am happy that as an immigrant, I have got a chance to contribute back to America, and also as I Christian I remember who have really invented the technology, since I did not invent the amniotic membrane. I was just privileged to be given a precious opportunity to capture a glimpse of a part of God’s original creation”, Dr. Wang said.
“Christians have to lead the AI revolution”, Dr. Wang emphasized. “A breakthrough technology such as AI can do amazing thing, but just like atomic energy, it can create nuclear power plan, but also, atomic bomb. Science has to come under moral, ethical and faith guidance”. This is a historical opportunity, for Christians to lead and help shape the future of AI in the world, to make sure that AI will indeed benefit mankind, rather than destroying it!
